Help the local people in need during the covid-19 pandemic

BECAUSE SHARING IS CARING!

Everyone in the small village of Bukit Lawang relies mainly on tourism. However the National Park and the whole village have been closed to tourism already since mid March! Without any help from the government most of the people are struggling to earn a living and to support some basics needs of their families!

Laura, one of our lovely former guest decided to organize a fundraising campaign in collaboration with us in order to help the local community of Bukit Lawang during this tough period.

At Sumatra Orangutan Explore we deeply care about the local community that is the reason why we want to help the people in need who are hardly impacted by the pandemic. We already used our savings to help our 15 staff members, their families and some other partners. Now we would like to help more and thanks to the amazing initiative of Laura and YOUR help it might be possible!

Together, even with only a FEW EUROS we can make a BIG DIFFERENCE in the community!

THANKS to every beautiful soul for your precious help!

WHY & HOW BUKIT LAWANG IS IMPACTED BY THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

The small riverside village of Bukit Lawang is located in North Sumatra, Indonesia at the entrance of the Gunung Leuser National Park, one of the richest tropical rainforests in South East Asia! Its unique location makes it the perfect place to stay to discover the amazing jungle and its unique wildlife. This wonderful biodiverse rainforest provides a home for many insects, mammals, reptiles but also for endangered and protected species like the Sumatran Tigers, Rhinoceros, Slow Loris, Elephants and of course the wonderful Sumatran Orangutans (it is actually one of the 2 only places in the world where you can observe Orangutans in the wild). But this beautiful little village is also home of many  adorable local people, always smiling and helping each others!

Everyone in this tourist village rely mainly on tourism, from the guesthouses owners and staff, trekking guides, assistants, cookers and cleaning staff to the little farmers, local craftsmen, tuk tuk drivers, drivers...

However due to the COVID-19 virus outbreak, the National Park and all the village as been closed t tourism already since almost 3 months to prevent the virus spreading to the local community and to the orangutans. Thus local people have no income since almost 3 months and with no help from the government they are struggling to support their families and to fulfill some basics needs such as eating. Unfortunately we have no clear view about when things are going to get better and when Indonesia will be opened to tourists again. The high season (July-August) is the period where most of the local people make some savings to get through the rest of the year and we are afraid that this  year the high season might not happen at all or would be for sure highly impacted what means the pandemia will have a long-lasting effect on the people in here.

That's is the reason why this fundraising campaign aims to help the community of Bukit Lawang, especially the people the most in need, to get through this tough time.

A WORD FROM LAURA, OUR AMAZING GUEST WHO LAUNCHED THIS FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN

My name is Laura. I stayed at Bukit Lawang at Sumatra Orangutan Explore last summer and I was treated as a member of the community, even as a member of a family. This place, its people's humility and respect for nature...it captivated me....and so did to everyone that has ever reached the place.

This is a call to everyone who loves nature, who loves animals and specially Orangutans and who is in a safer position to help each other. In times of need, sharing is really caring, and this people need us right now!!! This is story about people, with names and lives.

THANK YOU so much Laura, we don't have words to thank you enough!

HOW YOU CAN HELP

We want to help people to survive this tough time and make sure that families in need are able to eat that's why we plan to distribute food supplies.

An Indonesian family mainly rely on rice, noodles, eggs, cooking oil and vegetables to eat. Vegetables are quite cheap (0,50-2€ and some people are lucky to grow their own veggies, thus we want to focus on the other basic food supplies that are more expensive and that every single Indonesian family needs to buy in order and to survive.

The food parcels we will give include the following basic food supplies:
  - 10kg of rice (7€)
  - 40 packages of noodles (3€)
  - 30 eggs (3€)
  - 1L of cooking oil (1,20€)
  - Sweet soya sauce (1€)
  - 1kg of sugar (1,20€)

So as you can see people don't need much to live, with only 16€ we can supply a family from 2 to 3 weeks according its size

That is why every donation, even the smallest ones, matters! You can make a big difference in the local community by only helping with a few euros!

We hope to be able to raise 3,200€ thanks to your generous support in order to help out 200 families in Bukit Lawang!

THANKS IN ADVANCE TO EVERY BEAUTIFUL SOUL WHICH WILL HELP US IN OUR MISSION!
